Have Your Say About Winnipeg Council Pay

Author: Colin Craig 2011/07/21

Winnipeg's City Hall has hired an outside consultant to review council's pay & benefit levels and make any recommendations on what should change.

Today the Canadian Taxpayers Federation met with the consultant, Michael Werier, and provided him with our recommendations. Here's the PowerPoint we used - click here.

Our top recommendations included:

1) Remove the tax free status that council members currently enjoy (1/3 of their earnings are tax free)
2) Convert council’s gold-plated pension plan into a matched, dollar-for-dollar RRSP system
3) Look at developing a performance pay model; rewarding councillors for delivering better results

If you would like to learn more about existing council pay and benefit levels, the City of Winnipeg has information here - http://www.winnipeg.ca/council/compensationReview.stm.
